Title of Lesson: World War Looms: Dictators
Goals and Objectives
Students will learn about the dictatorships of Stalin, Hitler, and Mussolini. Students will be able to identify their main goals and strategies for the war. Students will analyze the policy of U.S isolationism and explain its significance.
California State Content Standard:
11.7.1: Examine the origins of American involvement in the war, with an emphasis on the events that precipitated the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Lesson Introduction
Students will engage in a brainstorming activity. Students on a piece of paper will write down anything they know about World War II dictators. What country did they rule, what are they famous for, etc.
Vocabulary
Students will learn and write down the following vocabulary words: nationalism, totalitarianism, fascism, Nazisim, isolationism, Neutrality Acts
Content Delivery
Present a sliderocket presentation on the dictators in World War II. With focus on how the actions of those dictators will eventually lead the United States into war. Presentation will also focus on the concept of isolationism and why the United States had that policy.

Student Engagement
Students will watch a short video of Hitler giving a speech. Students will then pair up with a partner and talk about what they noticed in the video, (body language, crowd reaction, etc.) Later in the lecture, students will pair-share about what the United States should do about the rise of dictators and fascist regimes. Students will analyze a political cartoon. Lastly, students will work on an organizational activity about all of the dictators presented in the chapter.

Demonstrated Learning
Teacher will monitor student's discussion during pair-share activities and also class discussions. Teacher will be able to see if the students were able to comprehend the material after completion of the organizational worksheet.
Lesson Closure
Exit ticket- students will write down what the Neutrality Acts were and how they affected U.S involvement in World War II
Accommodations
English Learners- will be placed in groups with proficient English speakers. Presentation goes over vocabulary and puts the word in simpler terms. Directions will be read slowly and clearly. Use of visuals on presentation.
Struggling Readers- During pair-share activities, teacher will make sure struggling readers are understanding the vocabulary terms.
Special Needs- During pair-share activities, teacher will make sure struggling readers are understanding the vocabulary terms.
